A 100 percent Irish-owned company, Armstrong Electronics Ltd (AEL), was founded in 1968 and has a long track record of success in its chosen product markets in Ireland and Europe.

The main business of the company is the integration of telecommunications systems, the provision of communications services, and the distribution of electronic equipment. Its comprehensive range of services in the professional satellite area includes the design and development of SNG vehicles for sale and hire, VSAT installations, turn-key earth stations, and radio distribution networks throughout Europe (including Central and Eastern Europe) and North Africa.

More recently, and following a long history of trading with Poland, AEL established a Polish subsidiary to facilitate its trading activity throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

Management and Key Personnel

The Managing Director of AEL is Douglas Armstrong, an Electronics Engineer with prior career experience working in the UK for Marconi, Philips and Independant Television. Douglas Armstrong was the originator of an interactive satellite broadcasting training demonstration project in Poland, the implementation of which led to significant R and D opportunities, both in production / broadcasting and in technical innovation.

John Long is a shareholder and AEL's Sales Director, being with the company for fifteen years and with in-depth knowledge of AEL's products and services and of customers and their requirements.

Dr. George Waters, former Director General of Irish TV (RTE) and, more recently, Technical Director of the European Broadcasting Union, Geneva, has recently joined the board of the company.

AEL has strong technical competencies. The engineering team is led by Jerry Gatrell as Chief Engineer. Jerry Gatrell was previously Chief Operations Engineer with British Aerospace Communications, Stevenage. He has been with AEL since 1992.

The Company continues to enhance its technical capability and this is reinforced by its recent appointment of Don Evetts as Assistant Chief Engineer. Don Evetts joined AEL from the European Space Agency where he was in charge of all ESA VSAT Ground Installations at the ESA Headquarters in Holland.

AEL has developed significant R and D links with Plymouth University and with Professor Martin Tomlinson, working as consultant to AEL.

AEL currently employs a core staff of 14 and has approximately 25 sub-contractors, many of which are full-time.
